10 Days Birding and Deer Watching Tour to Central Myanmar (Burma)
For see some speciality Myanmar (Asian) bird species and Golden Deer
Expect over 150 species of bird and more than 100 individuals of Brow-antlered Deer.
Day 1: Yangon (Myanmar, formerly Burma) arrival day
Arrive at Yangon (formerly Rangoon) international airport. Transfer and check in the hotel for one night stay. If we have time we will do Yangon City birding where Little Grebe, Bronze-winged and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, Lesser Whistling Duck, Common Moorhen, Oriental Darter, Little cormorant, Coppersmith Barbet, Mynas, Bee-eaters, Bulbuls, Tailorbird, Prinia and other birds will be seen. Overnight will be at hotel in Yangon.
Day 2: Yangon – Mandalay – Kantbalu
Morning fly from Yangon to Mandalay. Then proceed to Kantbalu by train (5 hours drive). Overnight will be at forest guest house in Kantbalu.
Day 3: Kantbalu – Chatthin Wildlife Sanctuary
In the morning, proceed to Chathin Wildlife Sanctuary by Jeep (two hours drive). Up on arrival Ohatthin, we will do birding and deer watching in the Indaing (Dipterocarpus) Forests by tractor. Overnight will be at Forest guest house in Chatthin Wildlife Sanctuary.
Day 4 – 6: Chatthin Wildlife Sanctuary
We will be birding three full days in Chatthin Wildlife Sanctuary. Here we will be able to see Red Junglefowl, Yellow-legged Buttonquail, Alexandrine, Red-breasted, Rose-ringed, Grey-headed and Blossom-headed Parakeets, 13 species of Woodpecker such as – Eurasian Wryneck, Grey-capped Pygmy, Fulvous-breasted, Yellow-crowned, Rufous, White-bellied, Streak-throated, Grey-headed and Great Slaty Woodpeckers, Common and Greater Flamebacks, Lesser and Greater Yellownapes, Lineated Barbet, Blue-eared Kingfisher, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Plaintive Cuckoo, Barn Owl, Savanna and Large-tailed Nightjars, White-breasted Waterhen, White-eyed Buzzard, Myanmar-near endemic White-rumped Falcom, Collared Falconet, Burmese Shrike, Rufous Treepie, Black-hooded Oriole, White-rumped Shama, Black-backed and White-crowned Forktails, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, White-throated Babbler (Myanmar’s Endemic), Vinous-breasted and Black-collared Starling, Hill Myna, Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch, Great Tit, Streak-eared, Olive and Brown-breasted Bulbuls, Burmese Bushlark (Myanmar’s Endemic), Comb, Spot-billed and Lesser Whistling Ducks, Oriental Darter, Black and Woolly-necked Storks, Red-wettled and Grey-headed Lapwings. And also we can easily see Brow-antlered Deer in the deciduous forest of Chatthin. Overnight will be at forest guest house in Chatthin Wildlife Sanctuary.
Day 7: Chatthin – Kanbalu
Morning, we will be birding and deer watching again. After lunch we will drive back to Kanbalu by Jeep. Overnight will be at forest guest house in Kantbalu.
Day 8: Kanbalu – Mandalay
We will back to Mandalay by early express train. Overnight will be at hotel in Mandalay.
Day 9: Mandalay – Yangon
In the morning we will be birding around Mandalay or if interest the archeological site will be visit to famous sites. Late afternoon we will drive to Mandalay air port for fly back to Yangon. On the way to the Mandalay air port we will be birding to see Oriental Darter, Little and Great Cormorants, Greylag Goose, Comb, Spot-billed, Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks, Eurasian Wigeon, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Black-winged Stilt, Grey and Purple Herons, Glossy Ibises and other bird species. Overnight will be at hotel in Yangon.
City tour or visit to famous Shwedagon Pagoda, the city’s primary Landmark, with its magnificent golden stupa. Transfer to Yangon International Airport for the departure flight at your flight time.
The best time to go is during October to May.
Fitness: The tour does not require a high level of fitness but particularly should be in good general health.
Accommodation: Twin sharing room. The guest house at Kanbalu and Chatthin is basic.
Climate: Usually hot.
Equipment: Recommended gear to bring is sun hat, sun cream, flash light and raincoat.
